Phlebotomist Responsibilities

As an important part of our clinical operations, your duties will include:

  • Responsible for knowing the correct method for drawing blood.

  • Reviewing orders to see that all of the correct tests were ordered before drawing the client.

  • Maintain a courteous and professional manner when dealing with clients and staff

  • Responsible for performing EKGs.

  • Responsible for setting up and instructing clients on Holter monitors; also removal of such equipment.

  • Responsible for following departmental guidelines on universal precautions and hazardous waste guidelines.

  • Delivering all stats that are drawn back to the Laboratory.

  • Responsible for assisting in the Laboratory as needed, which may include: Urinalysis, Sed Rates, Screens, and send outs.

  • Making appointments for lab work ordered by physicians and getting clients' date of birth.

  • Attendance is an essential component of the job


Phlebotomist Requirements:

  • Previous experience working as a phlebotomist in a high-volume setting required

  • Good verbal and written communication.

  • Knowledge and proficiency in performing Electrocardiogram, Holter monitor.

  • Must be able to read and interpret orders in order to draw correct tests.

  • Good listening skills.

  • Must be able to distinguish colors to determine appropriate tubes.

  • Must be able to bend to draw from patients sitting in phlebotomy chairs.

  • Must be able to physically access certain parts of the building within a reasonable amount of time.


Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM, flexibility is necessary as this schedule is subject to change.

  • Overtime as required

  • Occasional Saturdays, 8:30 am to 12:30 pm

Job Title: Phlebotomist II


Job Description

The Phlebotomist II supports a busy clinical laboratory by performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collections, troubleshooting issues, training others, and recommending improvements to workflow. This role ensures accurate specimen handling and documentation while providing clear, courteous explanations of procedures to patients in a fast-paced environment.


Responsibilities

  • Perform venipunctures and other blood draws accurately and efficiently using straight needles and butterfly needles.

  • Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.

  • Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.

  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure proper identification and accuracy.

  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders.

  • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy.

  • Package specimens for transport and follow all procedures necessary to maintain specimen integrity.

  • Store specimens at the required temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.

  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures as required to maintain a safe and compliant work area.

  • Update patient information accurately in the system and maintain thorough documentation.

  • Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct specimen collection and processing.

  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and regulatory requirements.

  • Attend annual department trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures and regulations.

  • Answer telephone calls in a professional manner and read or communicate laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

  • Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, processing, or workflow and make recommendations to improve efficiency.

  • Support training efforts by demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and workflow practices to team members as needed.


Essential Skills

  • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in phlebotomy, including at least 6 months performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.

  • Proven experience performing venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles.

  • Hands-on experience with specimen collection, including blood, urine, and fecal samples.

  • Ability to label, centrifuge, split, freeze, store, and package specimens in accordance with test orders and protocols.

  • Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying test requisitions or computer labels against orders.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for data entry, documentation, and basic reporting.

  • Thorough understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations related to laboratory and specimen handling.

  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients, colleagues, and healthcare providers.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.


Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience recording maintenance data and performing decontamination procedures in a laboratory setting.

  • Familiarity with updating patient information and working with laboratory information systems or similar software.

  • Ability to interpret and fully understand physicians’ orders related to laboratory testing.

  • Experience answering telephone inquiries and reading or relaying laboratory results.

  • Comfort providing guidance and informal training on phlebotomy techniques and workflow improvements.

  • Demonstrated reliability and consistency in following established procedures and protocols.


Work Environment

This role operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting with a focus on high-volume specimen collection and processing. The schedule typically includes Monday through Friday with additional Saturday hours as needed. You work with standard phlebotomy equipment such as straight needles, butterfly needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and temperature-controlled storage units. The environment requires strict adherence to safety and regulatory standards, including OSHA and DEP guidelines, and involves regular participation in annual department trainings. Professional attire appropriate for a clinical or laboratory setting is expected, along with compliance with all safety and infection control procedures.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $24.00/hr.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Perform blood collections by venipuncture and capillary techniques for all age groups

  • Collect specimens for drug screens, paternity tests, alcohol tests etc.

  • Perform data entry of patient information in an accurate and timely manner

  • Process billing information and collect payments as necessary

  • Prepare all collected specimens for testing and analysis

Minimum Qualifications:

  • In lieu of work experience, a Phlebotomy certification or completed training program must come from an accredited agency
