Job Overview: The Phlebotomist is a vital member of the healthcare team, primarily responsible for the skilled and safe collection of blood samples from patients of all ages for diagnostic testing, transfusions, research, and blood donations,

This role demands exceptional attention to detail to ensure accurate patient identification and proper specimen labeling, which are paramount to patient safety and reliable test results,

The successful candidate must possess excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrating compassion and professionalism to help anxious or nervous patients feel comfortable and at ease during procedures,


Qualifications:Required:

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent (GED), Successful completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program,


Experience Required:

Completion of all mandatory orientation programs and clinical training hours (often 20-40 hours of supervised practical experience) as part of the education program,


Preferred:

Prior experience in a fast-paced medical setting, such as a hospital or diagnostic laboratory, is highly desirable,


Licenses and Certifications

Required:

Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification

Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) from the National Health career Association (NHA), or

Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), or

Registered Phlebotomy Technician (RPT) from American Medical Technologists (AMT),


Essential Functions:

Perform venipuncture and capillary punctures (finger sticks/heel sticks for infants) on diverse patient populations, determining the most appropriate method based on patient age, health, and test requirements,

Adhere to strict infection control and safety guidelines, including proper hand hygiene, wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), and the safe disposal of all used sharps and biohazardous materials,

Greet and identify patients using a minimum of two identifiers (e,g, name and date of birth) to ensure the correct procedure is performed on the correct individual,

Clearly explain blood collection procedures to patients to help them understand the process and alleviate any fears or concerns they may have,

Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and patience when interacting with patients, visitors, and other medical professionals,

Accurately label all collected blood and non-blood specimens (such as urine or oral fluid samples) immediately following collection and verify all patient information matches the test orders,

Enter patient demographics, test orders, and collection information into laboratory information systems (LIS) or electronic health records (EHR) with meticulous detail,

Maintain an organized and sanitary work station, manage inventory, and assist with ordering supplies as needed,

Comply with all legal regulations and privacy rights, such as HIPAA, related to the handling of patient information and medical records,

The Clerk Phlebotomist plays a critical role in healthcare settings by efficiently collecting blood samples and managing patient information with accuracy and professionalism. This position ensures that specimens are properly labeled, handled, and transported to the laboratory for timely analysis, directly impacting patient diagnosis and treatment. The role requires strong organizational skills to maintain accurate records and support administrative tasks related to patient care. The Clerk Phlebotomist serves as a key point of contact for patients, providing compassionate communication to ease any concerns during the blood collection process. Ultimately, this position contributes to the smooth operation of clinical services by combining technical phlebotomy skills with clerical duties to support healthcare teams and improve patient outcomes.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Certification in phlebotomy from an accredited program.

  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems.

  • Knowledge of infection control and safety procedures related to blood collection.

  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain patient confidentiality.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working as a phlebotomist in a clinical or hospital setting.

  • Additional certification in medical office administration or related clerical training.

  • Proficiency with advanced EHR software and scheduling systems.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with experience in patient-facing roles.

  • Bilingual abilities to support diverse patient populations.


Responsibilities:
